Peleg's Log! Winners — Plus Hymn To Knowledge!
We have 2 winners for the contest presented in the previous edition of Peleg's Log!
Our first winner was Gerry Rzeppa, software engineer, founder and developer of the Osmosian Order of Plain English Programmers, and the author of the not-so-children's book, Some of the Parts.
Our second winner is Atom tha Immortal, a programmer, graphic designer, and successful Hip-Hop artist. He is also a deep thinker who recently wrote this critical, must-read blog that pertains to the central theme of The Days of Peleg. Atom also designed this alternate cover.
Both had perfect scores of 10—although Atom did have to make use of the extra credit question. :-)
Atom and Gerry have been great friends and supporters to me, and it is with great pleasure that they are receiving autographed, fourth-edition copies of The Days of Peleg.
For those who didn't get all of the answers, here they are:
- What is the modern name for Arinya? (Page 59, 70) Kangaroos
- What kind of birds did Serug discover and care for? Penguins
- What ailment afflicted eleven of the Urbat's crew during their battle with starvation? (Page 297) Scurvy
- What is the modern name for the star that is discussed in the opening of Chapter 29? Sirius
- What do we now call Thaxad's scientific apparatus on pages 65 and 301? Cloud Chamber
- What was the "stranger fruit" at Manco Chavin's estate? (Page 189) Pineapple
- Throughout the book, Lifeforce is a euphemism for what? Evolution
- What are the Al'Bakr or "White Cows" known as today? (page 112, 613) Magellanic Clouds
- The name of Peleg's vessel was the Urbat, or "Dead Dog". What other "dog" ship launched in 1831 completed a famous circumnavigation? Beagle
- Throughout the book, "Mentors" and large-browed dwellers in Haganah are reminiscent of what "evolutionary" species of man? Neanderthals
Extra Credit: The opening disclaimer states that "Any similarities with actual persons, living or dead, are purely coincidental (with one obvious exception)."
Question: Which character in the book is the "one obvious exception", and what living person is this character based upon?
Answer: Richard Dawkins
Hymn to Knowledge!
Recently translated from hitherto unknown cuneiform tablets is the Hymn entitled "We Give Our Lives And Live For Knowledge" that was sung at the conclusion of High Minister Reu-Nathor's presentation and mission announcement. Researchers are still working on ways to realize the actual pitches and harmonies used in this hymn, and once some progress has been made, it will be included in future editions of Peleg's Log.
The translation:
We Give Our Lives and Live For Knowledge
From fires deep beneath the oceans,
Whence came all Life and Mind appearing,
To realms and planes beyond Margidda,
Whose wisdom we are ever nearing.
We give our lives, and live for Knowledge,
Our Minds and Bodies sacrificing.
Objective and deductive is she:
Revealing all; her paths enticing.
The inner wanderers behold we,
Two phases, transits, speeds displaying.
Four outer worlds go forth and backwards
Along ecliptic plane relaying.
We give our lives, and live for Knowledge,
Our Minds and Bodies sacrificing.
Objective and deductive is she:
Revealing all; her paths enticing.
Two worlds beyond our sight are hidden,
Green and blue they are from near to far.
As dust did shape the realm of Utu
Cosmic vapors formed the farthest star.
We give our lives, and live for Knowledge,
Our Minds and Bodies sacrificing.
Objective and deductive is she:
Revealing all; her paths enticing.
Marriage of Space and Time eternal,
Celestial bodies known but hidden.
The Force of Life compels, expanding;
Increasing Mind, by chance un-bidden.
We give our lives, and live for Knowledge,
Our Minds and Bodies sacrificing.
Objective and deductive is she:
Revealing all; her paths enticing.
